4 cases of XBB.1 detected in MP

Bhopal: Four cases of new Omicron subvariant XBB.1 and one case of XBB, have been diagnosed in Madhya Pradesh, according to INSACOG.

XBB variant comes from the BA.2 sublineage of the virus. However, experts point out the real danger is from the subvariant of omicron, named XBB.1.5. It is slowly gaining traction worldwide and increasing Covid-19 cases in some countries. The timeline of the cases and their sequencing were not available.

MP’s three bordering states to the west, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Rajasthan have more than 50 per cent of all the XBB.1 and XBB variant cases reported in India.

Barely 100 Covid-19 tests are being conducted across Madhya Pradesh each day in the recent past. According to experts, Covid-19 testing should be enhanced and genome sequencing should be increased.

According to state health department daily bulletin there are less than one dozen Covid-19 cases across Madhya Pradesh.

However, ICMR reporting does not concur. Jabalpur which had nil positivity rate in the third week of December had 0.5 per cent positivity rate by the end of December 31. Covid-19 infection rate remained nil across all but three districts of MP.
