‘All know who has acted like Aurangzeb’: Eknath Shinde’s dig at Uddhav Thackeray

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Thursday indirectly hit out at rival Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray for Sanjay Raut’s remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Without naming Thackeray or Raut, Shinde said that a senior leader in the Uddhav Sena had likened PM Modi to Mughal emperor Aurangzeb and that doing so was an “act of treason” and an “insult to the nation”.

“Aurangzeb didn’t even spare his father and his brother. Now, everyone knows who acted like Aurangzeb,” Shinde said, indirectly targeting Uddhav Thackeray.

Uddhav Thackeray fell out with his cousin Raj Thackeray, whose party Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) is likely to join the ruling coalition government in Maharashtra.

Addressing a rally in Buldhana in the Vidarbha region, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut had likened PM Modi to Aurangzeb.

He had said that while Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the founder of the Maratha empire, was born in Maharashtra, Aurangzeb was born in present-day Gujarat, the home state of PM Modi.

“There is a place called Dahod (in Gujarat) where Modi was born, Aurangzeb was also born there. So this Aurangzebi attitude is marching towards Maharashtra from Gujarat and Delhi, and also against Shiv Sena and our self-respect. Don’t say Modi has come, say Aurangzeb has arrived. We will bury them,” Raut was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.

Lauding PM Modi, Shinde said that the Prime Minister fulfilled the dream of Balasaheb Thackeray by revoking Article 370. “Still, they are comparing PM Modi with the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb,” he said.

“The remarks are unfortunate. Aurangzeb hurt the self-respect of Maharashtra. Likening Prime Minister Narendra Modi (to the Mughal emperor) is an insult to the country. It’s treason,” the Chief Minister said.

Further, Shinde urged his MLAs to gear up for the upcoming elections and put in efforts in their respective constituencies. “This will determine your progress and accordingly you will get a ticket in the assembly elections,” he said during a meeting of the party cadre to review the preparation of the upcoming polls.

“No matter how busy I am, I am aware of what’s happening in every taluka. No one can fool me and I know everyone’s kundali,” he added.

He also directed his cadre to maintain the discipline of the party. “The son of a king won’t be king. Only the one who works hard will be king,” he said.

‘Mahayuti’, the ruling coalition in Maharashtra comprises the Shiv Sena, the BJP and the NCP led by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. Shinde said the alliance has set a target of winning 45 of the 48 Lok Sabha seats in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.
