Bihar clears proposal for redevelopment of Sita Temple in Sitamarhi

The Bihar Cabinet has cleared a proposal for the acquisition of 50 acres for the redevelopment of Sitamarhi’s Punaura Dham Temple. The government gave its assent to the proposal that was forwarded by the state’s tourism department.

Also known as Maa Janaki Janmabhoomi Temple, this place is believed to be the birthplace of the Hindu deity Sita.

Meanwhile, officials of the Bihar State Board of Religious Trust have claimed that the tourism department encroached into their jurisdiction by making such a proposal to the state government.

The acquisition of 50 acres will be over and above the 16.63 acres that the Bihar government had acquired earlier for redevelopment of the area around the existing temple premises.

About Punaura Dham Temple

Maa Janaki Janmabhoomi Temple, also known as Punaura Dham, is located in Punaura village of Bihar’s Sitamarhi. It is believed that the Hindu deity Sita was born in this place.

Behind the temple in Punaura Dham, there is a lake called Janaki Kund.

Notably, Sitamarhi is also a part of the Ramayana circuit, a set of 15 important places mentioned in the Ramayana, that has been identified by the Central government for development in a bid to boost religious tourism.
