Election Commission to announce Lok Sabha poll dates today

The dates for the Lok Sabha elections will be announced by the Election Commission on Saturday at 3 pm. Election dates for Assembly polls in a few states will also be announced today, as stated by the central poll body.

This announcement comes as the term of the current Lok Sabha nears its end on June 16th.

  • The ECI is tasked with ensuring a new House is constituted before that deadline. The Model Code of Conduct, a set of guidelines for political parties during elections, will come into effect as soon as the dates are announced.

  • Nearly 97 crore people are eligible to cast their votes in the upcoming polls at over 12 lakh polling stations. Ahead of the announcement, the election commission visited all the states and reviewed the preparations.

  • While the BJP aims to secure 400 seats for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and 370 for the saffron party alone, it is viewed as a do-or-die fight for the Opposition, which is fighting under the banner of the INDIA bloc in many states. All the major parties have partially announced candidates for the Lok Sabha polls, and seat discussions are underway in few other states.

  • In the 2019 polls, the BJP won 303 seats while the Congress got 52 seats. It could not muster enough numbers to claim the position of Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. This election was announced on March 10 and held in seven phases.

  • States like Arunachal Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, and Odisha are expected to conduct their assembly elections alongside the national polls as their terms are coming to an end on various dates in June. Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar said earlier this week that the poll body will decide on Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir after reviewing the security situation.
