England vs India | ‘Virat Kohli doesn’t deserve No. 3 spot in T20Is’: Fans furious after Birmingham failure

Virat Kohli failed to get going on his return to the T20I side as the former captain got out just 1 in the 2nd T20I against England at Edgbaston in Birmingham on Saturday, July 9. Kohli got out to debutant England pacer Richard Gleeson while trying to hit a big shot in the powerplay as England picked up as many as 3 wickets inside the first 7 overs.

Virat Kohli returned to the T20I Xi for the first time since February 2022 wherein he played 2 matches in the shortest format of the game against West Indies at home.

Kohli got out in the 7th over as he tried to hit one into the stands in the leg-side. However, the ball hit the outside edge of the star batter’s blade and ballooned into the sky before the catch was completed by Dawid Malan.

England vs India, 2nd T20I Updates

Virat Kohli looked to get going from the word go but the former captain threw it away by playing a shot that was uncalled for in the very first over after the powerplay.

Questions have been asked of Virat Kohli’s place in the T20I format of the game as the former captain has not been able to strike at a healthy pace while the likes of Deepak Hooda and Suryakumar Yadav have been setting the stage on fire in the middle-overs.

Notably, Kohli returned to the XI after replacing Hooda, who was in the form of his life after having hit a hundred and a fifty in Ireland and scoring a quickfire 30-odd in the first T20i.

A section of cricket fans on social media expressed their frustration over the repeated failures of Virat Kohli in the shortest format of the game.

Kohli missed the T20I series against Sri Lanka at home before IPL 2022 and was not part of the home series against South Africa in June. Kohli also missed the 2 T20Is in Ireland to prepare for the rescheduled 5th Test in Birmingham.

Kohli failed in whites as well as he managed just 31 runs across 2 innings as India slipped to a 7-wicket loss.

On Saturday, former India batter Ajay Jadeja said India have to make a choice about whether they have to play Virat Kohli in T20i cricket, considering the team’s willingness to be more proactive in the middle-overs.

“Virat Kohli is a choice that you have to make. Do you want to play that solidity at the top and then get runs right at the back? It’s that old-style when Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will bat at the top and you would have players like Dhoni where they get 60 in the last 4 overs. In the last game, they got less than 35 runs in the last 4 overs.,” Jadeja told Sony Sports.

“It depends on whom you want to play. I feel you have a choice, it’s a touch one to make. If I had to pick a T20 side, Virat probably won’t be there,” he added.
