HIGHLIGHTS

  • India lost the 5th Test by 7 wickets
  • England chased 378 to win the Birmingham Test
  • The five-match series ended at 2-2

Former batter Virender Sehwag reckoned that the atmosphere in the Indian team isn’t quite what it should be. The Nawab of Najafgarh said that India need to address a few things at the earliest after losing the rescheduled fifth Test by seven wickets on Tuesday, July 6.

England chased down 378 runs after Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow stitched together an unbeaten 269-run partnership for the fourth wicket. The duo came in after the Three Lions lost three early wickets, but they soaked in the pressure with precision.

Joe Root stayed unbeaten on 142 and scored his fifth Test century this year. Bairstow also stayed unbeaten on a century and is currently the leading run-scorer in Test cricket in 2022. It also happened to be the Brits’ fourth successful run-chase in a row.

Sehwag, in the meantime, said that the Indian bowlers looked completely off-color when Root and Bairstow were smothering them.

“India have quite a few issues to address. Only Pujara and Pant in the top-six are scoring runs. Jadeja batting brilliantly but we need top-order batters to be in form. Bowling in the fourth innings was absolutely listless,” Sehwag posted.

Sehwag also heaped praise on Root, who scored his 28th Test century and surpassed Virat Kohli and Steve Smith’s tally for Test centuries.

“Fourth Test hundred in this series for this amazing run machine, Joe Root. The best test batsman in the world right now. Congratulations England on your highest successful run chase,” Sehwag added.

Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar also lauded Root and Bairstow for their brilliant performance against a strong bowling attack.

“Special win by England to level the series. Joe Root & Jonny Bairstow have been in sublime form and made batting look very easy. Congratulations to England on a convincing victory.”
