IPL 2024 | Ruturaj Gaikwad enjoys 1st day as CSK captain vs RCB: ‘Never felt any pressure’

Ruturaj Gaikwad said he was under no pressure during any point of his first day as captain in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as Chennai Super Kings defeated Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the season opener in Chennai by a comfortable 6-wicket margin. CSK looked in complete control of the game from start to finish as they chased down 174 runs on a sporting pitch in Chennai in just 18.4 overs. There were multiple heroes for Chennai and Ruturaj could not have asked for more from his men on his debut as captain in the biggest T20 league in the world.

IPL 2024: CSK vs RCB Scorecard | Highlights

After MS Dhoni stepped down as captain of CSK and handed over the baton on the eve of the IPL 2024 opener, concerns were raised as to how Rururaj Gaikwad would step into the big shoes of his former captain. However, if early signs are anything to go by, CSK’s call to pick Ruturaj as Dhoni’s successor might not look bad at the end of the season. The 27-year-old opener, who led India at the Asian Games last year, looked clam and composed as he marshalled his troops wonderfully well while not holding himself back from seeking advice from Dhoni at various points on the field.

“I have always enjoyed it. Haven’t felt the additional pressure, right from the state side. Not even a single time I felt pressured by anything. Obviously had Mahi bhai with me,” Ruturaj said after leading CSK to the first win of their title defence on Friday, March 22.

Ruturaj Gaikwad lost the toss on Friday and RCB opted to bat first, but the young captain did not let the occasion overwhelm him. Ruturaj got the bowling changes spot on, especially in the powerplay. The decision to bring Mustafizur Rahman in the penultimate over of the powerplay worked wonders as he got the big wicket of Faf du Plessis, who was threatening to go big, and snap a 41-run opening stand. Mustafizur also got Rajat Patidar for a golden duck in the same over.

From 41 for 0, RCB slipped to 42 for 3 and then to 72 for 5. Mustafizur picked up 4 wickets and registered his best figures in the IPL on his debut for the Super Kings. Anuj Rawat and Dinesh Karthik stitched a sensational 95-run stand to lift Bengaluru to what looked a competitive total of 173.

RUTURAJ HAPPY, BUT NOT SATISFIED

However, after Rachin Ravindra raced off a strong start in his debut for the Super Kings, hitting 37 off just 15 balls, there was no looking back for CSK. Ruturaj himself chipped in with a run-a-ball 15 while the likes of Daryl Mitchell and Ajinkya Rahane chipped in with handy contributions.

Impact Player Shivam Dube hit 34 off 28 balls, while Ravindra Jadeja looked assured for his 17-ball 25 as CSK got past the finish line with ease.

Flaunting his understanding of the game, Ruturaj dissected the game wonderfully well during the post-match ceremony.

“Total control right from the start. 2-3 overs here and there but once the spinners came on, we were in control. 10-15 runs lesser would have been great but they came back well,” Ruturaj said.

“Lots of positives, but two-three things to work on. The batting, everyone chipped in. If we had a few batters from the top-order batting through, the chase would have been easier,” he added.

Chennai Super Kings will next face Gujarat Titans in a repeat of last year’s final in Chennai on Tuesday, March 25.
