Jeff Bezos reveals why he left Amazon, says he wanted to…

In a recent episode of the “Lex Fridman Podcast,” Jeff Bezos, the billionaire founder of Amazon, disclosed the motives behind his decision to step down as the CEO of the e-commerce giant two years ago. Bezos cited a deep-seated commitment to his space exploration venture, Blue Origin, as the primary driver for relinquishing his role at Amazon.

Established in 1994, Amazon flourished under Bezos’s leadership. However, he felt compelled to redirect his attention to Blue Origin, stressing the need for a renewed sense of urgency in advancing the ambitious goals of the rocket company. Bezos elucidated that juggling responsibilities at both Amazon and Blue Origin would have been formidable, given the dynamic and rapidly evolving nature of space exploration.

“As the CEO of a publicly traded company, it’s going to get my full attention. And it’s just how I think about things,” Bezos explained, underscoring the significance of prioritizing his duties at Amazon during his tenure.

Since his departure from Amazon, Bezos has immersed himself in the intricacies of Blue Origin, describing the experience as intense yet fulfilling. He acknowledged the exceptional dedication required, asserting that he has “never worked harder,” while candidly acknowledging the occasional challenges that accompany such a commitment.

Founded in 2000 by Bezos, Blue Origin competes in the fiercely competitive space industry alongside notable rivals such as Elon Musk’s SpaceX and Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic. The company boasts the development of three space vehicles: New Shepard, New Glenn, and Blue Moon.

Despite Bezos’s hands-on involvement, Blue Origin encountered setbacks when the New Shepard rocket experienced a mid-flight failure in September 2022. However, the company has recently announced plans to relaunch the New Shepard rocket into space next week, signifying a resurgence after resolving the technical issues that led to its earlier grounding.

As of the reporting, representatives from Blue Origin and Amazon have not issued official comments regarding Bezos’s statements. Nevertheless, Bezos’s commitment to space exploration underscores the ongoing competition and technological advancements within the commercial space sector.
