‘Kisan putra’ Jagdeep Dhankhar will be outstanding: PM’s tweets for BJP VP pick

Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankar as ‘Kisan Putra’, known for his humility, after the BJP announced the latter as its pick for the next Vice President of India.

BJP-led NDA today announced Jagdeep Dhankar as its pick for the Vice President of India.

PM Modi said that Jagdeep Dhankar brings with him an illustrious legal, legislative and gubernatorial career. He has always worked for the well-being of farmers, youth, women and the marginalised, PM Modi said.

“Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar Ji has excellent knowledge of our Constitution. He is also well-versed with legislative affairs. I am sure that he will be an outstanding Chair in the Rajya Sabha & guide the proceedings of the House with the aim of furthering national progress,” PM Modi tweeted.

President Ram Nath Kovind also congratulated Jagdeep Dhankar. Governors of different states are in the national capital to attend a dinner being hosted by the outgoing President Ram Nath Kovind.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah tweeted, “The manner in which Dhankar ji, the son of a farmer from Rajasthan, has reached here today after facing many economic and social challenges, is inspiring for all. I am sure that as the Vice-President and the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha Dhankar ji will increase the dignity of the Upper House.”

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also congratulated Jagdeep Dhankar on being announced as the NDA’s candidate for the Vice President of India.

“Congratulations to Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar on being announced as the NDA’s candidate for the Vice President of India. He is a farmer’s son who has a deep understanding of Law and the Constitution. He has spent years in public service. India will greatly benefit from his experience,” Rajnath Singh tweeted.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said that Jagdeep Dhankar will add to the dignity of the position.

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant tweeted, “Heartiest congratulations to Governor of West Bengal Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar Ji on being nominated as NDA’s candidate for Vice-Presidetial Election.”

Today, the BJP chaired a parliamentary board meet to decide on the Vice President’s candidate. Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired the meeting, which was attended by Union Ministers Amit Shah, Nitin Gadkari, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, and BJP National General Secretary BL Santosh, among others.

“We have decided to announce kisan putra (farmer’s son) Jagdeep Dhankhar as the BJP and NDA’s candidate for Vice President,” Nadda said.

Making the announcement here, BJP president JP Nadda lauded Dhankhar as a ‘kisan putra’ (farmer’s son) who established himself as a “people’s governor”.


Shortly after the name of Jagdeep Dhankar was announced for the next Vice President of India, the ruling party of West Bengal, All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), also revealed its official stand on the same.

TMC spokesperson, Kunal Ghosh, said, “We will not comment on anything related to VP elections till July 21. On July 21, Mamata Banerjee will meet all MPs and MLA’s at her residence to come up with their decision on VP elections”

Meanwhile, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar welcomed Jagdeep as the VP candidate of NDA and said that JD(U) will extend its support to him.


The West Bengal unit of BJP issued a statement in favour of the Governor after the announcement. BJP leader Rahul Sinha said Jagdeep Dhankar showed immaculate accuracy in democratic values.

Leader of the Opposition in West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari congratulated Jagdeep Dhankar for being chosen as the Vice Presidential candidate of the National Democratic Alliance.

Suvendhu Adhikari told India Today TV, “Right person has been chosen for the VP post. He has got huge experience in parliamentary democracy and I want to thank PM Modi and Nadda ji for the decision. If the Bengal govt follows the Constitution, they should have no issue with who becomes the Governor. So whoever takes up the charge will stand up against attempts to run down the Indian Constitution.”

Since assuming charge as the governor of West Bengal in July 2019, Dhankhar has taken on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee-led government regularly over various issues.

Jagdeep Dhankhar was in the national capital today and called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi before the prime minister left for the parliamentary board meeting. Jagdeep Dhankhar also met Home Minister Amit Shah last evening.
