Mamata Banerjee takes veiled dig at Centre, says funds being stopped for ‘saffronisation’

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday alleged that the “state government’s rights have been snatched for political reasons” in a veiled dig at the Centre. Without naming the government, Banerjee claimed that funds were being stopped to the state due to “saffronisation”.

“They have stopped funds to the state for saffronisation. They are asking to use their party colour saffron in health areas. We don’t use our party colour (green), we have our branding,” she said. The Chief Minister was speaking on the issue of health infrastructural developments.

Her remarks came days after she wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging the release of funds under the National Health Mission (NHM) to West Bengal.

In her letter dated November 29, Banerjee said the NHM has withheld the release of funds due to non-compliance with colour branding guidelines for Health and Wellness Centres, despite other conditions being fulfilled.

Last month, Banerjee sparked a row over her comments that the BJP “saffronised” the Indian cricket team while referring to their practice jerseys.

“Now everything is turning into saffron. We are proud of our Indian players and I believe they will be the world champions. But even their dress has been turned to saffron when they practice. They used to wear blue earlier,” she had said.

It must be noted that Team India’s match jersey is of blue colour, the orange kit is worn during the practice sessions.
