Manipur: Armed miscreants open fire during Congress meeting in Ukhrul’s Teinem village

A group of armed miscreants opened fire during a public meeting of the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) on Tuesday in Ukhrul district.

Addressing the press at the Congress Bhawan, MPCC president K Meghachandra said that Congress intending candidate from Ukhrul district (Outer Manipur constituency), Alfred Kanngam Arthur, was attacked by armed miscreants during a meeting held at Teinem village in Chingai Assembly Constituency on Tuesday.

Alfred, who is a former MLA, was attacked by armed miscreants on Monday as well at TK Woodland resort in Paorei Shirui village in Ukhrul.

The MPCC urged the chief electoral officer of Manipur and the state government to initiate security protection measures for the candidate for the outer constituency of Ukhrul district, following the attacks.

Meghachandra said that, as an intending candidate, Alfred Kanngam Arthur has been meeting people as part of his election campaign for the past three days.

In this situation, he was attacked by armed miscreants at around 2 pm on March 18 while taking part in a public meeting at TK Woodland Resort, following which the meeting was dismissed.

Alfred was attacked again at around 11 am on Tuesday at Teinem village by armed miscreants, the MPCC president said.

He said that due to these incidents, Alfred should be provided security cover by the law enforcing agencies as soon as possible, “so as to save the democracy, otherwise the right of a citizen, particularly our intending candidate, would be violated”.

Moreover, there will be no free and fair election in the state of Manipur if such a situation continues, K Meghachandra said.
