President Ram Nath Kovind on Sunday accepted the resignation of Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankar. Manipur Governor La. Ganesan has been given the additional charge to discharge the functions of the Governor of West Bengal until regular arrangements.
The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has picked Jagdeep Dhankar as their vice presidential pick, the elections for which are slated to be held on August 6.
“The President of India has accepted the resignation of Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar as Governor of West Bengal,” said the late night communique.
“The President of India has been pleased to appoint Shri La. Ganesan, Governor of Manipur to discharge the functions of the Governor of West Bengal, in addition to his own duties from the date he assumes charge of the office of the Governor of West Bengal, until regular arrangements are made,” it further read.
Earlier in the day, opposition parties picked former Union Minister and veteran Congress leader Margaret Alva as their vice presidential choice. Her candidature was announced today by Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Sharad Pawar.
On Saturday, the BJP called a parliamentary board meeting to pick the party’s candidate for the post of Vice-President of the country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, BJP Chief JP Nadda, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and other senior party leaders attended the meeting.
