PGI plans yoga, drug abuse course in its MBBS syllabus

Chandigarh: Premier medical institute PGI has finalised its MBBS academic syllabus and sent it to the health ministry. By next week, the agenda will be discussed.

The curriculum design includes a course on tobacco/drug abuse and research and innovation for students. These are in addition to yoga for the MBBS programme. The National Medical Commission has introduced yoga training in the MBBS foundation course. This training will be compulsory for an hour every day for at least 10 days.

The PGI’s MBBS committee has planned to take 25 acres — half of the total land area — in Sarangpur for its MBBS campus.

Initially, 100 seats have been proposed by the academic committee on MBBS in Sarangpur.

These courses shall be unique here, according to senior faculty.

Sources said by next year the MBBS course is expected to take off and the foundation stone shall be laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“The government is keen to start the programme in the institute soon and that is why the course has been designed within a few months. Otherwise, it takes much longer,” said a member of the MBBS committee in PGI.
