Rajasthan batter Riyan Parag could not control his tears after finally proving his worth with a match-changing knock against Delhi in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 match in Jaipur on Thursday. Parag was emotional in his mid-innings interview as he revealed that practice in the nets helped him get ready for the big stage. Parag highlighted his readiness to confront various challenges, having devised strategies for both sides of the wicket and possessing the confidence to execute shots like hitting sixes against short balls and dealing with yorkers.

Parag’s sensational 84-run unbeaten knock helped Rajasthan recover from a sluggish start and post a formidable total of 185 for 5 in their allotted 20 overs. Initially struggling at 58 for 3 halfway through their innings, the home side staged a remarkable recovery to set a commanding target for their opponents. When they were put into bat first, Rajasthan found themselves in trouble at 36 for 3 in the eighth over. However, a crucial partnership between Riyan Parag and Ashwin, followed by contributions from Dhruv Jurel and Shimron Hetmyer, turned the tide in their favor.

“It’s a result of a lot of practice behind the scenes. It’s not the bowler but the ball he’s bowling and I practised against a lot of those balls and could execute the shots tonight. I have my options ready both sides of the wicket, that’s what I’ve been working on lately. I back myself, I know I have the power to dig out yorkers and hit sixes off short balls. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn’t,” Riyan Parag told the broadcasters in the mid-innings interview.

Parag, in particular, delivered a stellar performance, crafting an unbeaten 84 off just 45 deliveries, which is one of the standout innings of the Indian T20 League thus far. His partnership with Ashwin was instrumental in stabilizing Rajasthan’s innings, and the late cameos from Jurel and Hetmyer further bolstered their total. While acknowledging the variability of outcomes, Parag credited the guidance from Kumar Sangakarra and Sanju Samson, who advised him to bat deep, enabling him to unleash his potential towards the end of innings. Despite the inherent challenges faced by new players in adapting to the demands of the game, Parag revealed a sense of satisfaction and emotional fulfillment derived from his dedicated efforts and the tangible results they produced.

“[Being 26 at run a ball] Sanga and Sanju bhaiyya came in and told me to do it deep, knew I’d go big at the end if I did. For someone coming in, it’s not easy but not as much for someone set. It’s been tough, I am a bit emotional right now. But it’s been a lot of work. Backed myself, practiced a lot, seeing the fruits of it now,” Parag added.
