RANCHI: In an extremely rare case, a 21-day-old baby was found carrying eight foetuses in her womb. The child is from Ramgarh district. Claiming that the “foetus-in-fetu” case could be the first such case in the world of an infant carrying so many foetuses, doctors at a city-based private hospi-tal said the child’s operation on November 1 was a success and that the newborn is recuperating well.
In medical terminology, foetus-in-fetu (FIF) is a rare condition in which one malformed vertebrate foetus is enclosed within the body of its twin.
Talking to TOI on Thursday, Dr Mohammed Imran, the paediatric surgeon said, “FIF occurs in one in five lakh live births. International medical journals have recorded one foetus in most of the FIF cases. I have neverfound so many foetuses in a newborn tillnow. ”
