Watch: IT Minister’s masterclass on development of semiconductor ecosystem

IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw explained the semiconductor ecosystem of India on a whiteboard on Thursday.

Vaishnaw announced the government’s plan to set up three semiconductor plants in India earlier on Thursday.

Vaishnaw explained the steps being taken by the Centre to develop the semiconductor ecosystem in the country by drawing charts on the whiteboard.

“There are four main components in the process, design fabrication (FAB), assembly-testing-marking-packaging (ATMP), and electronics manufacturing or circuit,” he said.

“The most difficult and costly tools for making semiconductors are EDA tools, which are made by three companies, Cadence, Synopsys, and Siemens. We have talked to these companies and have taken the entire EDA tool suite from them and provided it to 104 universities in the country,” he said.

He further said that the universities would now be able to expose their students to these new live tools and this would help in the rise of startups in the country.
