Achinta Sheuli on Sunday secured India’s sixth medal in weightlifting with a gold in the men’s 73 kg category.

Earlier in the day, Indian star Jeremy Lalrinnunga won the gold medal in the men’s 67 kg category, adding to India’s tally from 30th July.

On Saturday, India secured four medals as Mirabai Chanu (women’s 49 kg category) secured gold while Bindyarani Devi (women’s 55 kg category) and Sanket Sargar (men’s 55 kg category) secured silver. Gururaja Poojary also claimed the bronze in the men’s 61 kg category.

On Sunday, Sheuli started off his snatch round in the 73 kg category with an incredible lift of 137 kgs. He continued his fine effort and lifted 140 kgs on his second attempt and made it three in three with a herculean effort to lift 143 kgs.

The 20-year-old’s final attempt in the snatch round was a Commonwealth Games record.

With his first lift in the clean and jerk round, Sheuli set a games record with a combined lift of 309 kgs and gained the lead in the contest.

While Sheuli missed out on his second attempt, he was able to lift 170 kgs in the final attempt and broke his own Games record yet again as he pushed it to a combined lift of 313 kgs.

While Malaysia’s Erry Hidayat Muhammaed did push the 20-year-old all the way, Sheuli’s effort was enough to win the gold medal on Sunday.

Who is Achinta Sheuli?

The 20-year-old Achinta Sheuli took to weightlifting in 2010. By 2012, Sheuli had started winning medals at the district level. Coming from a humble background, the Indian weightlifter started training at a makeshift facility in a local farm and his brother Alok was a big factor in the success he had achieved in his career.

Sheuli went on to win the Khelo India Youth games gold medal in 2018 and the following year won his maiden major medal at the senior level, clinching Gold in the Commonwealth Championships.

Achinta has been consistently improving at the highest level and won silver at the World Youth Weightlifting Championship in 2021 and followed it up with his second Commonwealth Championships gold medal in the same year.

The 20-year-old, who idolises Mirabhai Chanu, has now announced his arrival on the world stage with a bronze in Birmingham. Early signs do show that he is set to become another gem in the jewels possessed by India in the weightlifting discipline.
