The Congress on Saturday shifted five party MLAs to Chennai fearing poaching by the BJP

According to sources, Congress MLAs, Member of Goa Legislative Assembly, Sankalp Amonkar, Alton Dcosta , Carlos Alvares, Rudolf Fernandes and Yuri Alemo have been shifted to Chennai.

The development comes at a time when the party alleged that former Goa chief minister Digambar Kamat and Michael Lobo tried to engineer a two-third split in the party. Dinesh Gundu Rao, Congress’ Goa in-charge said that BJP gave Rs 25 crores to party MLAs to join the saffron camp.

Michael Lobo had told India Today that he has no plans to join the BJP and refused the allegations.

The Congress had removed Michael Lobo as the Leader of Opposition in the Goa Assembly for conspiring to engineer a defection in the party. The party also filed petitions with the Goa Assembly Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar seeking disqualification of its MLAs Michael Lobo and Digambar Kamat for trying to engineer a split in the party. This comes after 5 of its MLAs, who went incommunicado, attended the Assembly session.

Earlier this month, five Congress MLAs were untraceable after the party called a meeting ahead of the assembly session.

The Congress has 10 MLAs in the 40-strong Goa assembly. The BJP rules the state with 20 MLAs.
