India at CWG 2022 Day 3 wrap: Jeremy and Achinta lift gold, India trounce Pakistan in cricket

The Indian weightlifters continued their fine run on Sunday as Jeremy Lalrinnunga and Achinta Sheuli secured gold medals for the country on Sunday at the Commonwealth Games 2022.

The Indian women’s cricket team also got back to winning ways as they trounced arch-rivals Pakistan, while Nikhat Zareen also started strong in her quest for a Commonwealth Games medal.

The Indian men’s hockey team also started their campaign in fine form as they scored eleven past hapless Ghana on Sunday.

Despite this, one disappointing result for India was seeing Shiva Thapa crash out on 31st July.

WEIGHTLIFTING: JEREMY WINS GOLD AND SETS GAMES RECORD

19-year-old Jeremy Lalrinnunga had a dream outing in the men’s 67 kg weighlifting category as he won the gold medal and set a Commonwealth Games record.

In his first appearance at the games, Jeremy set a new Commonwealth Games record of 300kg overall (140kg snatch and 160kg in clean and jerk).

WEIGHTLIFTING: ACHINTA LIFTS INDIA’S THIRD GOLD MEDAL

The dream campaign for Indian weightlifters continued as Achinta Sheuli won India’s third gold medal on Sunday, following in the footsteps of Mirabai Chanu and Jeremy.

The 20-year-old set two games records in his gold medal winning effort. First, with his final attempt in the Snatch round, Sheuli lifted 143 kgs. He also got the Games record for the maximum weight lifted with a total of 313 kgs.

CRICKET: MANDHANA POWERS INDIA TO COMFORTABLE WIN OVER PAKISTAN

Smriti Mandhana’s aggressive 42-ball 63 powered India to a commanding eight-wicket win over Pakistan in their second group game on Sunday.

The Indian bowling lineup ran through the Pakistani batting order and ensured that their rivals only put up 99 runs on the board.

India secured the win with 38 balls remaining to keep their hopes alive in the competition.

HOCKEY: INDIA PUT ELEVEN PAST HAPLESS GHANA

The Indian men’s hockey team got off to a flyer on Sunday with an 11-0 win over Ghana in their Commonwealth Games opener.

Vice-captain Harmanpreet Singh was the main man for India as he scored a hattrick while Jugraj Singh scored a brace. Manpreet Singh and Co will now face hosts England on 1st August.

BOXING: NIKHAT DAZZLES

Indian boxer Nikhat Zareen stormed into the quarterfinals of the women’s 50kg lightweight category with a strong performance against Mozambique’s Helena Ismael Bagao.

Zareen dominated the bout from the get-go and didn’t allow Bagao any room to mount a comeback in the tie.

BOXING: THAPA DISAPPOINTS

It was a day to forget for Shiva Thapa as he crashed out of the men’s 63.5kg round of 16 boxing competition at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham on Sunday.

Thapa lost to world championship bronze medallist Scotland’s Reese Lynch by a scoreline of 1-4. While the Indian boxer started well, Lynch came back in the next two rounds to dump Thapa out of the competition.

TABLE TENNIS: INDIA STORM INTO MEN’S SEMIFINAL

The Indian men’s team had a top performance against Bangladesh to ensure their place in the Table Tennis semifinals on Sunday. Sathiyan Gnanasekaran and Harmeet Desai secured the doubles win before Sharath Kamal and Gnanasekaran saw off their opponents in the singles matches.

India will now face Nigeria in the semis.

BADMINTON: INDIA TAKE ONE STEP CLOSER TO DEFENDING CROWN

The Indian mixed badminton team went one step closer to retaining their CWG title with a 3-0 win over South Africa. Lakshya Sen was on the money as he made a dominant effort to completely overwhelm his opponent on the day.

The Indian pair of Ashwini Ponappa and Sumeeth Reddy got the ball rolling with a win in the doubles round before Sen and Aakarshi Kashyap got the job done on Sunday.

SQUASH: JOSHNA ENTERS QUARTERFINALS

Joshna Chinappa produced a sublime performance to overcome New Zealand’s Kaitlyn Watts to progress into the quarterfinals of Squash on Sunday.

Chinappa won with a score line of 11-8, 9-11, 11-4 and 11-6 to keep her medal hopes alive.
