HIGHLIGHTS

  • Sania Mirza was bidding to win her maiden Grand Slam mixed doubles title
  • The 6-time major winner lost the semi-final along with Mate Pavic
  • Sania-Pavic pair lost to defending champions Neal Skupski and Desirae Krawczyk

Sania Mirza’s dreams of winning her maiden Grand Slam mixed doubles title came to an end on Wednesday, July 6 as the Indian tennis star lost her mixed doubles semi-final along with Croatian partner Mate Pavic. Sania and Pavic lost to defending champions Neal Skupski and Desirae Krawczyk 6-4, 5-7, 4-6 in a hard-fought match on Court Two at SW19.

Sania Mirza and Mate Pavic were up a set and a break and looked set to get the job done in straight sets but the Indo-Croatian pair lost its momentum with Skupski and Krawczyk raising their level midway through the 2nd set.

Skupski and Krawczyk won the 2nd set 7-5 and forced a decider. Sania and Pavic conceded a break in the 3rd set but broke back to level things early. However, at 5-4, the defending champions broke Pavic’s serve to book a place in Thursday’s final.

Sania Mirza gave it her all in what is likely to be her final match at Wimbledon as the Indian star announced earlier this year that she would be retiring from professional tennis at the end of the season. Sania took fans down the memory lane hitting those stunning forehand returns but it was not enough against gritty Skupski and Krawczyk.

Sania, who had won the Australian Open and French Open mixed doubles titles with Mahesh Bhupathi in 2009 and 2012, respectively, was bidding to reach her maiden mixed doubles final at Wimbledon. The Indian star, the winner of 6 Grand Slam titles, had won the mixed doubles US Open title with Bruno Soares in 2014.

However, 6th seeds Mirza and Pavic can be proud of their run in Wimbledon 2022 wherein they ousted 4th seeds John Peers and Gabriela Dabrowski, who won the French Open mixed doubles title in 2017 with Rohan Bopanna.

Notably, Sania had crashed out in the first round of the women’s doubles competition with Lucie Hradecka.
